increasingly the cheapest source of electricity across the globe, the cost of building not just the generation capacity but the transmission, storage, and digital infrastructure to integrate it smoothly into grids is likely to continue to challenge the electric power industry in the coming decades. Solving it will likely require innovative solutions from utilities and their regulators. No matter which of these energy transition challenges is rated highest, addressing all of them will likely create global, cross industry opportunities for innovation, investment, and partnerships.
integrating variable renewables into the grid while maintaining reliability concerns US survey respondents the most, with almost half ranking it number one. This is a key focus area in many other countries as well. However, an overwhelming majority of US survey respondents (68%) think a far higher share of renewably sourced electricity can be integrated while maintaining reliability. And it is already being done successfully in countries like Denmark, whose grid rates among the most reliable in the world. Being able to meet future renewable electricity demand was the second highest area of concern for US respondents (25%). This may well be very challenging given the rapid pace of net- zero carbon emissions targets being set by corporations, governments, and others. Meeting growing renewable demand could be aided by state and federal policies such as tax credits and renewable or clean energy standards. Finally, one in five survey respondents perceived funding the transition while keeping electricity affordable as the top challenge. While renewables are
