• Flooded and non-flooded gamma scans of both active areas and downcomers are invaluable for correctly diag - nosing tower problems. • Quantitative analysis of gamma scans provides concise information on liquid maldistribution between panels of two-pass or multi-pass trays. • Factors like plugging or damage that cause a seemingly
fairly small maldistribution of vapour between panels can lead to large variations in liquid splits to the panels. • Theories should be tested against plant tests, plant meas - urements, and gamma scans to obtain correct diagnostics. • Where fouling is expected, plugging-resistant tray designs with corrosion-resistant metallurgy should be applied. In wash sections, the tray design must resist downcomer unsealing.
