study the shape, size, and colour of the particulates, aiding in qualitative assessment. Elemental analysis can also be done to identify particle composition. This method ensures accurate TSS measurement and deeper insight into contamination types. Evaluation matrix Transcend Solutions evaluated multiple filter elements and media configurations for the rich amine filter unit to enhance performance and extend filter life. The redesigned elements were built to withstand higher differential pressures – up to 30-35 psid compared to the earlier 15-20 psid – though the increased pressure tolerance only modestly extended run life due to the steep pressure rise at the end of life. The proprietary Novalite media, made of inorganic microfibres, was tested in three

1. This run was disregarded as the plant switched rich pumps as part of its preventive maintenance programme, causing a slug of solids in the dead-leg to flood the elements. 2. The unit had an upset caused by a complete shutdown of gas flow to the amine unit.

variants (X, Y, Z) with descending filtration efficiencies. Instead of relying solely on micron ratings, the plant used total suspended solids (TSS) analysis to assess which media offered the best balance between contamination control and filter longevity. Media spacers, porous yet durable materials, were incorporated into the filter designs to prevent media collapse during flow. While adding spacers can slightly reduce total filter surface area, they preserve functional media by preventing channelling and uneven flow – critical factors in maintaining performance and extending online life. Spacers were tested both upstream and downstream of the media. Lastly, surface area was a key performance factor. Compared to conventional cellulose filters, Novalite-based designs had greater surface area. For example, Element C, with a larger 6.5in outer diameter, maximised housing space and improved flow capacity, thus increasing online run time.
The online life performance is summarised in Table 1 . The tests were conducted in the sequence listed, and as conclusions were drawn about certain variables, the testing protocol was narrowed. Fluid quality The gravimetric TSS analysis results are provided in Table 2 . Differential pressure measurements are shown in the table where available. TSS data were gathered to validate media grade performance. G-series run lengths were short; hence, no data were captured. The TSS analysis represents a measurement of all the particles in the stream that are larger than 0.5 microns. Additional TSS data were taken on the quench water feeding the amine system and measured at 20 mg/L. The photomicrograph of the sample is provided in Figure 3 .
